CRWRC has been working in Haiti for more than 30 years. By partnering with local churches and community organizations, CRWRC has empowered Haitian community leaders to no longer see themselves as victims of poverty, but as image bearers of God who have gifts they can use to serve their communities. In this new time of crisis, these local partners are now leading their communities in responding to the most urgent needs.
As CRWRC provides aid, it is also collaborating with other organizations to ensure that the aid efforts are coordinated and no needs fall through the gaps. “At this stage of the response it is about meeting the immediate needs,” said Koster, “but we want to be sure that our collective response has the greatest possible benefit in the long-term by coordinating our activities.”
Financial contributions for CRWRC's response are urgently needed. Every dollar makes a difference; donate online: US.
See upper link for more information and giving details!
We are the church! Offerings at Friendship designated as "Haiti" will support these efforts.

THOUGHT FOR THE THIRD WEEK “"I've been to the mountaintop," (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) cried. "I've seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. So I'm happy tonight; I'm not worried about anything; I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord." Since that day King had walked through the flames of trial. Yet, in that transfigured moment he trusted that in spite of everything God's glory would shine through his human weakness as he shared in Christ's sufferings. And one day, they would all reach the "Promised Land." We now carry with us the mountaintop vision of Christ's transfiguration and ours. The transfiguration of Jesus calls us to carry the vision back into our lives, no matter how difficult the struggle gets. One day He will bring all his brothers and sisters to share in His glory where we shall, as Peter says, 'become participants in the divine nature." And we will all be transfigured. Our eyes have seen the glory. Now, we must take that vision back with us down the mountain into Monday morning. There we must see everyone we touch and everything we struggle with in the light of this vision of the glory that will be. ”
excerpt of "The Shining Vision" Leonard J. Vander Zee
FRIENDSHIP ITEMS OF NOTE O Leadership Team Meeting is the 17th right after service. O C’King Women’s Bible Study meets 1st & 3rd Mondays at the parsonage. The meeting, Monday the 18th, is cancelled due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday; we next meet Feb 1st.
THOUGHT FOR THE SECOND WEEK We have to form habits to express what God’s grace has done in us. Do I manifest the essential sweetness of the Son of God, or the essential irritation of “myself” apart from Him? The only thing that will enable me to enjoy the disagreeable is the keen enthusiasm of letting the life of the Son of God manifest itself in me. No matter how disagreeable a thing may be, say–”Lord, I am delighted to obey Thee in this matter,” and instantly the Son of God will press to the front, and there will be manifested in my human life that which glorifies Jesus. The moment you obey the light, the Son of God presses through you in that particular, but if you debate you grieve the Spirit of God. Our circumstances are the means of manifesting how wonderfully perfect and extraordinarily pure the Son of God is. The thing that ought to make the heart beat is a new way of manifesting the Son of God. It is one thing to choose the disagreeable and another thing to go into the disagreeable by God’s engineering. If God puts you there, He is amply sufficient. Keep your soul fit to manifest the life of the Son of God. Never live on memories; let the word of God be always living and active in you..” an excerpt of Oswald Chambers from mikeratliff.wordpress.com

THOUGHT FOR EPIPHANY Keep it real through the New Year – ‘In Advent, we dwell on our need for Christ’s coming - it is not until Christmas that the party explodes. Still the climax of the season; but rather than being the end, it is the beginning of celebration. We sing of God’s faithfulness and his promises fulfilled from Christmas Day, through New Years, right to early January (Epiphany, the traditional arrival of the wise men, is January 6, for instance, hence the twelve days of Christmas)….My fear, is that we have drifted into Christmas in Hallmark and secular terms, rather than Biblical themes; our witness is less striking and counter-cultural. Most of us aren’t aware how much culture shapes church holidays and would do well to learn a bit more about the way the church has celebrated Advent and Christmas through the centuries if only for perspective. We have a story to tell of longing, that should stand out in our culture. “Secular society knows a little something about Christmas but virtually nothing about Advent. The danger for the Church is to end up going in this same direction.”’ excerpted from ‘‘thinkchristian.net” ~ ‘Advent is for Longing’
Our Classis Treasurer leaves us for heaven ... -- Posted by
on Friday, January 1 2010
Friendship just received word that:
On December 29, Joyce De Kock, who served as our classis treasurer for over two years, passed away in Redlands, CA at the age of 47. She had been diagnosed with lung cancer five weeks ago. She is survived by her husband, Russ, a Christian school principal, and two college-aged sons, Kevin and Kyle. Also surviving her is a large extended family including her father, Rev. Martin Zylstra who once served as the pastor of the Highland Ave. CRC in Redlands, and a multitude of friends. She was a member of The River CRC in Redlands. A memorial service will be held @3 p.m. at the University of Redlands Chapel on Thursday, January 7. (The university chapel gives us more capacity to accomodate those wishing to attend than does The River CRC.)
Here's what her husband Russ wrote on her blog yesterday: I was fortunate to have her as my wife for 26 years, five months and 14 days and I wouldn't trade my time with her for anything. My boys and I would like to thank you for all your support and prayers over the last five weeks. We all prayed for the miracle of healing and our prayers have been answered. Joyce has no sickness or pain as she dances in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I would like to invite all of you to Joyce's Memorial Service at 3 pm on Thursday, January 7 at the University of Redlands chapel. With appreciation and love, Russ"
With Christian love, Will Verhoef, their pastor and Stated Clerk of Classis CA South
Friendship CRC joins with all those who sorrow at her loss and rejoice in her heavenly habitation.

THOUGHT FOR THE THANKSGIVING WEEK
‘* Thank and praise God for everything in your life. Thank Him for even the difficulties. It is a sacrifice to do this. But He can turn troubles to triumph. "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise - the fruit of lips that confess his name" Hebrews 13:15. * Don't allow yourself to complain about anything. During the difficult times, be very careful to watch your tongue. Instead of complaining, think of ways you can verbally offer God the sacrifice of thanksgiving. * Don't compare yourself with others. Don't wish that your life was different. God knows what is best. The Bible says having a thankful heart is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. When we begin to thank God for what we have rather than comparing ourselves with others, it opens the door for God's blessings. ’

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK ‘No promise is made to those who give to the poor to be seen of men. They have their reward at once and cannot expect to be paid twice. Let us hide away our charity -- yes, hide it even from ourselves. Give so often and so much as a matter of course that you no more take note that you have helped the poor than that you have eaten your regular meals. Do your alms without even whispering to yourself, How generous I am! Do not thus attempt to reward yourself. Leave the matter with God, who never fails to see, to record, and to reward. Blessed is the man who is busy in secret with his kindness: he finds a special joy in his unknown benevolences. This is the bread, which eaten by stealth, is sweeter than the banquets of kings. How can I indulge myself today with this delightful luxury?’ excerpted from C. H. Spurgeon~ ‘Faith’s Checkbook’ ‘

Husbands & wives come together to build our marriages; God’s symbol for His Church. Certainly it is a worthy investment! O Remember in prayer those not present.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
’God is the Master Engineer, He allows the difficulties to come in order to see if you can vault over them properly.... God will never shield you from any of the requirements of a son or daughter of His. Peter says - "Think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you."…It does not matter how it hurts as long as it gives God the chance to manifest Himself in your mortal flesh. May God not find the whine in us any more, but may He find us full of spiritual pluck and athleticism, ready to face anything He brings. We have to exercise ourselves in order that the Son of God may be manifested in our mortal flesh. God never has museums. The only aim of the life is that the Son of God may be manifested, and all dictation to God vanishes. Our Lord never dictated to His Father, and we are not here to dictate to God; we are here to submit to His will so that He may work through us what He wants. When we realize this, He will make us broken bread and poured out wine to feed and nourish others.’
excerpted from Oswald Chambers~ ‘My Utmost for His Highest’
BIBLE VERSE FOR THE MONTH:
"Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, And declare His works with rejoicing..” ~Psalms 107:22

"Its primary focus is the work of intercessory prayer and citizen action on behalf of persecuted communities of the Christian faith. We also encourage prayer for the souls of the oppressors, the nations that promote persecution, and those who ignore it," says an OSJ newsletter.

THOUGHT FOR REFORMATION WEEK
"…95 things Luther wanted to discuss caused Luther to seek ultimate authority for the church in the Scriptures and not in the whims of popes and councils, because both had erred; Scripture alone was the Church's authority and sole rule of faith….
In Philippians 3, Paul gives his list for his confidence in the flesh, then proceeds to discard it. May we not make lists of our own, whether it be our successes leading to self-righteousness, or lists of failures leading to our condemnation and depression. But may we be as Paul who, putting his lists behind him, who pressed forward to know Christ. May you discard whatever list you have, whatever thing other than Christ you are trusting in and receive daily by faith the righteousness revealed in Jesus…
Look to Christ and discover anew the Reformation of the 16th Century in your own heart of heart. Remember the vital importance of Scripture alone, faith alone, grace alone, Christ alone, to the glory of God alone!”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK You are The Church:
’1. the only institution dealing with the ultimate issues. Death. Judgment. Relationships. Purpose. Lasting priorities. Meaning in life. Identity. Heaven and Hell. 2. providing perspective that gives dignity to mankind. 3. providing a moral and ethical compass in the midst of relativism. It still stands on the timeless bedrock of Scripture. 4. the only place to find true community, healing, compassion, and love…people care…the Spirit of God is at work, weaving together the lives within the Body. 5. (like no other institution) has provided motivation for the most lasting, unselfish, essential, courageous ministries on earth…Schools. Hospitals...’

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
‘Then all the people departed each to his house, and David went home to bless his household 1 Chr 16. David is on his way home and seeking to see the overflow of that worship touch his family as well … several strong reminders: -What we do on Sunday morning is the beginning of a weeklong period of worship, meant to go with us beyond the church doors into every area of our lives. -True worship buoys our entire being…. -Family worship is a natural extension of corporate worship. -This text (well actually its sister 2 Sam 16) reminds us that the cares of the world, if we allow them to intrude, can destroy our spirit of worship and take away the joy of our relationship with God. We must be ever vigilant to protect and preserve the attitude of worship.

Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat." "We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered. "Bring them here to me," he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. Matthew 14
A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor. Proverbs 22

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Is there something you believe God would not accomplish through you?
‘“Do not despise…small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.” Zech 4: Against a towering giant, a brook pebble seems futile. But God used it to topple Goliath. Compared to the tithes of the wealthy, a widow’s coins seem puny. But Jesus used them to inspire us… Moses had a staff. David had a sling. Samson had a jawbone. Rahab had a string. Mary had some ointment. Dorcas had a needle. All were used by God. God inhabits the tiny seed, empowers the tiny deed…Don’t discount the smallness of your deeds.’
