Moses

(Aids to Bible Studies)

Moses is one of the God-given makers of history. He was born during the Egyptian oppression, about four hundred years after the time of Joseph, and as a babe was laid in an ark of bulrushes and committed to the Nile. Being found by a daughter of Pharaoh, he was reared as her son, and thus became a master of the learning of Egypt. Misunderstood in his first attempt to champion the cause of his people, he spent forty years in the solitude of the desert. The voice of God from the midst of the burning bush then summoned him to secure the release, through mighty signs and wonders, of the whole body of the Israelites. He was their patient, much-enduring leader, and he has to his credit the Mosaic legislation, the far-reaching effect of which flows through the centuries and still underlies our civilization.
