Loving Through Service

Love and Service

“And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:42-45)

Contrary to popular belief, one of the hallmarks of Christianity is loving one another through service. Indeed, the Lord himself not only articulated that course for those who would follow Him (see passage above), but also instructed his disciples to emulate the example that He left them at the last supper:

“When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.” (John 13:12-15)

As the Word states, all believers have been equipped by the Holy Spirit with spiritual gifts and are to use those gifts not for personal gain and adulation, but rather, to serve and strengthen the Body of Christ:

“Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:9-11)

Therefore, whether you call Friendship your Church home or not, we encourage you to join us and believers all over the globe to show the world the beauty of God’s grace by loving others through service:

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Galatians 5:13-14)
